Died Company A, 10th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 25 December 1864 in Beaufort, SC

After fall of Atlanta, camped there until Oct. 4th. when followed Hood northward to Gaylesville, Ala.; thence returned to Marietta, Ga., where received 200 recruits, and from there started on the "March to the Sea" on Nov. 13th. Participated in the movement of the Army of the Tennessee on this march, ending with the taking Of Savannah. Prior to the surrender of the city, made march of 50 miles south along railroad, to Walt- honsville and the Altamaha river. Remained at Savannah until January 3, 1865, when embarked on transports for Beaufort, S.C.

His spouse was Margaret Ann (James) Paisley. She was b 08 Nov 1841 in Ripley, Brown Co., IL.

She appointed John C. Badby her attorney. Witnesses to her declaration were William W. Paisley and John C. Brown.

31 May 1867 Affidavit by Dr. John Bond "being duly sworn on his oath states that in Nov & December 1864 he was assistant surgeon of the 10th Reg. of Ills. Infty vols and on duty as such. That James E. Paisley and William Paisley were both private soldiers of Co. A of said Reg. That on or about the 20th day of December 1864, while at Savannah Georgia both said soldiers were sent by me to Division Fireld Hospital. That said James E. Paisley being at the time sick with measles & Diarrhoea. That on the next day affiant was detailed at said hospital and found said Paisly still then sick as above stated. That affiant sent them to the General Hospital at Beaufort from which a few days after he received notice of the death of said James E. Paisley in said hospital. That the disease of which he was sick & of which affiant has heard he died was diarrhoera & measles & was contracted while in the line of his duty on the march from Atlanta to Savannah. That said Paisley was a good soldier & that affiant has no interest in the prosecution of this claim." Signed John Bond and witnessed by T. O. Tinnen.

R. M. Worthington, M.D. filed a Certificate of Physician stating he attended Margaret Paisley as Accoucheur for Mary Frances and William Franklin Paisley. He states he knows there are two younger children, but he did not attend the births. (June 3, 1867)

Letters of Guardianship from Schuyler Co., IL dated December term 1873 appoint Margaret Ridings guardian for William F. Paisley, Frederick W. Paisley, Edith A. Paisley and Mary F. Paisley. She was given the care of their persons and the custody and management of their property.

She filed for an increase of pension on 08 June 1867. The witnesses for that filing were David Ridings and Lydia James.

Affidavit on 28 Mar 1874 of Mary Shupe stating she attended as the nurse of Margaret Paisley at the birth of Frederick and Edith A. Paisley and that Dr. Jesse Sweeney attended in each case as Physician. Dr. Sweeney is now deceased.
