John Garner departed this life at his home in Marshall Thursday evening, April 20, lacking 5 days being his 85th birthday.

The funeral was held at the family residence Sunday afternoon. Rev. Shaw of the Baptist Church officiating. The remains were interred in the Marshall Cemetery. The comrades of William B. Archer Post, G.A.R., having charge of the ceremonies.

Mr. Garner was born in Pike County, Ohio, April 25, 1814. Here he grew to manhood and October 14, 1838, he married Miss. Sarah Baker of Ross County. The newly married couple began house keeping in Ross County and on July 11, 1844, Mrs. Garner died leaving one child, now Mrs. WILLAIM COONS of Paris. In 1846, Mr. Garner moved to Highland County where he remained until 1850 when he came to Illinois settling in Clark County.

June 6, 1852, he married for his second wife Miss. Jane Hargrove who survives him. Of this union were born 5 children, two sons and three daughters, all of whom survive him and are married with the exception of the youngest daughter, Maggie. Maggie made her home with Judge Wilkins family for number of years.

All the children and grandchildren were present for the funeral.

In 1862, Comrade Garner enlisted in Company F, 123rd Illinois. In 1863 he was discharged for disability but in December of the same year he reenlisted and was assigned Company C, 62nd Illinois in which he served until mustered out.
