And now it is my great honor to present to you the Muster Roll for the 3 year enlistment of Captain J. B. Thomas, Company I, of the 87th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, United States Army, Colonel John. E. Whiting, from the first day of January 1863, to the thirty-first day of February 1863.
All of the men enrolled at either Carmi or Shawneetown (with a few exceptions from Enfield, Elmgrove, and Logansport), Illinois (places of general rendezvous), under either Colonel Whiting or Captain Thomas. They were officially mustered into service on September 22nd, 1862 at Shawneetown by either Capt. Washington (?) or Lt. Burlit (?). They were last paid by Maj. Hampstead, with the US Paymaster being Maj. Brinkton. The men were paid a 52 dollars every four months.
When the company was stationed at Memphis, Tennessee, this assesment of command was made:

Next to the assesment of command, on the reverse of the muster roll, is a note describing the regiment. There is not a name given to who wrote it, and it describes things that go against others that have already been stated. The note reads:
"This Regiment has never been engaged in action. Moved from Shawneetown, Illinois, on the 31st day of, Jan., 1863, under orders from Gen. Wright and arrived at Memphis, Tenneessee on the 3rd of Feb., 1863, where it is now stationed. It is attached to the third brigade, composed of the 2nd Wisconsin and 15th Illinois Cavalry and 87th Illinois Infantry. The Brigade is commmanded by Col. Thomas Stephens. "
