L. C. Runion enlisted in the Union army first as a 90 day recruit in Missouri and then in Illinois after his family moved there. He was mustered into the 92nd Illinois Infantry, Co. K. He made every muster and was mustered out as a Sergeant at the end of the war. His unit was part of Sherman's army on the March to the Sea.
