James Carroll Gray was born August 15, 1848 in Whiteside County, Illinois. He died August 14, 1905 at Meade, Meade County, Kansas and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Meade, Kansas. He moved to Missouri about late 1869 or early 1870 with his parents and siblings.

He married Sarah Margaret Lucas December 23, 1870 in Missouri. They had three children born in Missouri and then moved to Nebraska and three more children were born there. It appears the family moved to Arcdia, Crawford County, Kansas sometime in 1894 and then on to Dodge City, Ford County, Kansas where he was accepted into the Fort Dodge Soldier's Home on December 24, 1896.
