Edwin Howes fought with Company K of the 20th Illinois Volunteer Infantry from Newark, Illinois (1861-65). This photo was taken around 1915. Many of these men (Edwin Howes included) were prisoners at Andersonville after they were captured at the Battle of Atlanta. David Read contacted Elmer Dickson who was able to identify the men pictured here:

"I didn't get back sooner to you as I needed to do some research to identify the men in the picture. I recognized one of the men immediately. The man standing on Edwin's right, his left looking at the picture, was Alexander "Alex" Patterson. He was my gr-gr-uncle and a Corporal in Company H, 89th IL INF. His sister, Jeanette Patterson, married my gr-grandfather, Simon Dickson. Their father was Matthew Patterson. I grew up on what is known as the Patterson Homestead. Matthew came to kendall County in 1837. He acquired his farm in 1838, and I am proud to say that the farm is still in our family."

The picture was actually taken on Memorial Day 1911. There is one other member of Co. K. 20th IL INF in the picture. It is a picture of the members of Yorkville GAR Post that attended the Memorial Day services that year. Sitting: left to right - Myron C. Skinner, W. F. Donovan, Franklin M. Hobbs, John Redmon Marshall, and Charles M. Hill. Standing: left to right. You will need to take in both rows at once, that is alternate from the front to the rear and back again. Left standing holding the flag - Samuel Hagerman, the other member of the 20th IL INF; Orville Wormley Beebe; Frank Pinney; Solon Smith Boomer; Alexander Patterson; Henry Chappell; Edwin Howes; John Fitzgerald; Wallace McCloud; William T. Linn; Barney Phillis; John Cooper; Robert Bucks; Benamin F. Herrington; and George Manley."
