Thomas Dennis was born 1824 and died 1900. He enlisted as a private in Company A, 112th Illinois Volunteer Infantry at Annawan, Illinois on August 12th 1862 along with his brother-in-law, John H. Batten. They enlisted for three years. Company A, 112th Illinois, was commanded by Captain Dow.

Private Dennis was promoted to Corporal in September 1864.

He was mustered out with his company on June 20, 1865 in North Carolina.

The 112th Illinios Infantry participated in more than seventy various engagements during its career. In 1862 the unit advanced to Georgetown and Lexington, Ky. Operations against Pegram in southeastern Ky. in 1863. Action at Monticello and Saunder's raid in east Tenn. Skirmishes in Knoxville, Strawberry Plains, Roger's Gap, and Powder Springs Gap, Tenn. Pursuit of Scott in east Tenn. and southeastern Kentucky. Operations against Scott in eastern Kentucky. Burnside's Campaign in east Tenn. Skirmishes in Winter's Gap, Cleveland, Athens, Calhoun, and Charleston, Tenn. Engagement at Campbell's Station. Skirmishes near Knoxville, Tenn. Siege of Knoxville, Tenn. Engagement at Bean's Station. In 1864 brought more skirmishes like Flat Creek and Muddy Creek, Tenn. Operations about Danridge, Tenn. Actions at Danridge, Fair Garden and Kelly's Ford, Tenn. Atlanta Campaign. Demonstration on Dalton, Ga. Battle of Resaca, Ga. Advance on Dallas, Ga. Action at Cartersville, Ga. Operations on the line of Pumpkin Vine Creek and the battles of Dallas, New Hope Church, and Allatoona Hills, Ga. Operations about Marietta and against Kennesaw Mountain, Ga. Combats about Lost Mountain, Ga. Combats at Noyes' Creek, Cheyney's Farm, and Oiley's Creek, Ga. Operations on the line of Nickajack Creek and Chattahoochie River, Ga. Siege of Atlanta. Battle of Jonesborough and engagement at Lovejoy Station, Ga. Operations against Hood in northern Ga. and northern Alabama. Battles of Franklin, Nashville, Tenn. Pursuit of Hood to the Tennessee River near Bridgeport,Ala. Movement from Nashville,Tenn. to Fort Fisher, N.C. by way of Washington, D.C. Action at Fort Anderson and capture of Fort Anderson, N.C. Skirmish at Town Creek, N.C. Occupation of Wilmington, N.C. Campaign of the Carolinas. Advance on and occupation of Goldsborough, N.C. Skirmish at Gulley's, N.C. Advance on and occupation of Raleigh, N.C. On hand for the surrender of Johnston's forces,Bennett's House, Durham Station, N.C. April 26,1865.

After the surrender,the 112th Illinois Infantry returned to Greensborough, N.C. It remained there on garrison duty,until mustered out of Federal service on June 20,1865.

During its career the regiment lost four officers and seventy-six enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. an additional officer and one hundred fifty-three enlisted men died from disease or other non-battlefield causes.
