Alfred Reed Tomlinson

Company C, 102nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Company H, 16th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Alfred Reed Tomlinson [aka A. R. or Reed] was born 2/14/1846 in Canada. He emigrated to the U. S. with his parents about March 22, 1860. They settled in Colona, IL. He and his brother Gideon enlisted in the Union army on March 23, 1865.  His unit was Co C, 102 Volunteers Regiment.

According to the dates I have, he was then transferred directly to Co H.,16th Regiment, IL Infantry. He participated in the Resaca battle. His unit marched to Washington and participated in the Grand Review. After which, they were mustered out July 8th, 1865.

Tomlinson returned to Illinois to become a farmer with extensive holdings. He was Sheriff of Mercer County, IL from 1898 till 1902. He died March 6, 1868 and is buried in the Swedona Western Cemetery in Mercer County, IL

A little side note: His g-great grandson, Edward Sims, went from Oklahoma and purchased farmland only a couple of miles from where A. R. Tomlinson had his farm. This was after the death of Tomlinson.
