Buried in the El Paso Cemetery, Derby, Sedgwick County, Kansas is Civil War veteran Ansel W. Sloat who was born September 16, 1834 and died September 18, 1913. The Civil War headstone shows he served with Co. G, 28th Illinois Infantry and buried next to Ansel is wife martha T. (Julian) Sloat who was born February 19, 1842 and died August 31, 1902. They were married in Schuyler County, Illinois on October 5, 1861. Also buried next to Ansel and Martha are Lewis sloat who died February 3, 1954 and Ermine Sloat who died July 24, 1952. I would assume they are children of Ansel and Martha. They had one other child, Edward, who was born March 1870 in Illinois.

Ansel was mustered into Co. G, 28th Illinois Infantry on August 19, 1861 and was discharged February 29, 1862 due to disability. At the time of his enlistment he gave his residence as Rushville, Illinois. Ansel at one time lived in the area of Rose Hill, Butler County, Kansas as he was listed on the Civil War disabled veterans living in Butler County with a post office of Rose Hill, Kansas.
